Bajaj Auto to launch India’s ‘fastest’ bike forever

The new 220cc motorcycle will be launched on 23 June; to cost around Rs70,000 in New Delhi

Mumbai: India’s second largest maker of motorcycles, Bajaj Auto Ltd, is gearing up to launch the fastest bike made in India.

The company will launch the new Pulsar 220cc model on 23 June and will price it around Rs70,000 (ex-showroom in New Delhi), people close to development said.

Bajaj Auto first developed the fuel injection technology on a smaller engine on its flagship model Pulsar. The new version will have a top speed of over 140km per hour (kmph), almost 15kmph more than its predecessor.

The price is much lower than its predecessor, which was priced close to Rs85,000, and will compete with India Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd’s R15 and FZ16 models.

The demand for sports bikes (Rs65,000-plus) in India is around 15,000 units per month. Yamaha sells around 1,500 units of its R15.

People familiar with Bajaj Auto’s plans say the company is targeting one-third of the market to strengthen its leadership position in this segment. They say Bajaj Auto will also start exports to some international markets, including Sri Lanka, Colombia and Indonesia.
